At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes a brief letter to his wife informing her they they just received marching orders to an unknown destination. Says there were "many exciting rumors in camp this afternoon," but there is no definite information as to where they will be traveling. Mentions that he is unaware of any recent news because he has not seen a paper since yesterday morning. Promises to write when they reach the next stopping place, "Providence permitting."
