At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Says she received Ogden's letter dated the 14th, which discussed her son's improved health. Mentions she received a letter from Alphonse on the same day, and could tell from his handwriting that he was still weak. Believes that Ogden has become almost like a mother to him. States she hopes that Ogden's efforts are rewarded by God, and asks that Ogden please write to inform her whether or not Alphonse will obtain a discharge.
