At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Pankow, who was engaged to William Hartman, tells Ogden that he kept two pictures of the two of them. Requests Ogden sends her the pictures if possible. Mentions that Mr. Hartman's son-in-law's brother, a "comrade of William," would have visited Ogden when he was in Philadelphia, but did not receive the letter in time. States that the family received the body and opened the coffin because they "could not bear to have the body of their beloved son as near and not see him." She concludes by thanking Ogden for caring for William.
