At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes from camp near Potomac Creek. Mentions he does not plan on reenlisting. Says that the men feel misused, and therefore will not come back. The men of his regiment have only eight more days remaining in their term of duty. Assures Ogden that he will round up some buttons and bring them to the hospital on his way home.
