At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes of his safe arrival home. Apologizes for not writing sooner, but explains that he has been busy with "the pleasures of home..." Thanks her for her care, and tells her that he will remember her in his prayers. Includes an embossed seal in the upper left hand corner.
