Yorke, a soldier, replies to a letter from Hazen, a reverend in Plymouth, New Hampshire. Discusses the death of Amanda, (possibly his wife), stating "It seems at times, the world looks so dark & dreary, to me, that I have nothing for which to live. Yet I know that it is not right, to fact, thus, I have something for which to live. My country calls & calls ..."
