At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discussing the debates in the press between Henry Clay and John Quincy Adams, and offering to send Hobart issues of the "National Republican" a Cincinatti newspaper. Believes Clay must respond to Adams forceful challenge. Hayward was a strong supporter of Adams, and was trying to win Hobart's help in securing Adam's favors for his clients, Looker and Reynolds, the publishers of the "New Republic."
