At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Comments on Hobart's choice of Reverend Sparks for Chaplain, which "makes much conversation among our Brimstone folks." Speculates "that a Holy league will proceed to your city to exterminate the Infidels from the land." Notes that Mr. Winslow will soon be home "with ample funds for every demand." Mentions the "slow advance of winter" and that commercial prospects are good.
