At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The letter is unsigned, but it is believed to be written by a relative of Franklin Butler Van Valkenburgh due to context. The letter mentions the inclusion of a picture of Franklin, which is not a part of the collection. Mrs. G. S. Van Valkenburgh is the wife of Franklin's brother Gerrit Smith Van Valkenburgh.
