At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Printed text of patriotic Confederate song celebrating the taking of Fort Sumter. Details events of the bombardment, including the death of two Union soldiers during Anderson's final salute to the United States flag. Illustrated with the first Confederate national flag flying in the breeze. Sung to the tune of "Dearest Mae." The chorus warns "Uncle Abe...ne'er invade our Southern soil."
