At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Drill and marching manual. Printed by Brawner & Putnam in Griffin, Georgia and John M. Cooper & Co. in Savannah, Georgia. Engraving and printing by H.P. Hill & Co. in Griffin, Georgia. Original green muslin wrapper with patriotic label featuring the Confederate national flag. Contains 28 illustrations throughout. Inscription inside front cover shows Union ownership information (apparently captured): "Frank T. Campbell, Capt. Co. 'B' 40th Iowa Infty. Reg. July 24, 1864."
