At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Attempts to calm soldiers and citizens. Assures them that there is no base for alarm as the military will ensure public security. Praises Major General Harry T. Hays, who is commanding the military district, and state that he will not involve them in useless sacrifice. Directs that Confederate soldiers at home in areas where there are no Confederate forces must report to the Officers of the Reserve Corps to aid in keeping public order. Printed general orders.
