At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Proclamation of Jefferson Davis for a day of fasting and prayer. Article on the reorganization of the Maryland Line. Article titled "Charleston Impregnable from the Sea Approaches," which states "Charleston will not be taken from the sea approaches, and therefore that the land forces now here may, ere long be withdrawn." Article from the "New York Times" stating that letters found on the body of Colonel Dahlgren were forgeries -- the "Times" claims that Federal troops would never kill Jefferson Davis and his cabinet when they reach Richmond. Police items on a slave woman involved in a theft and a "mulatto woman" charged with assault. Note that North Carolina Governor Zebulon B. Vance arrived in Richmond the day before.
