Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Summary news from the "Batlimore Gazette," which is mostly an update on the action around Chattanooga. News of the shelling of forts around Charleston, South Carolina. Published dispatches of General Robert E. Lee. Details of the battle around Chickamauga. Letter to the editor on "The Bank Convention Scheme." Several large stains. Also some tears, one of which has been repaired with what appears to be scotch tape.
