At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Observations of a Yankee spy who traded for southern cotton are printed. Two articles discuss running the blockade, and two other articles discuss an important habeas corpus case. The minutes of a peace convention in New York City are included. A long article reports the cavalry fight near Brandy Station.
