Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Correspondence includes news items from other locations and other newspapers. North Carolina State Convention minutes are often printed. Most articles are war-related, and often an article on coast defenses is present. Contributions to soldiers are listed, particularly items handmade by women. The front page of each issue is compiled of advertisements; some ads warn that cash only, not credit, will be required for sales. The back page is made up of ads and court listings.
