Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Subjects include General Joseph Johnston's Address to the Army of Tennessee, Special Correspondence from Phillip's Legion, Letter from the Chaplain of Watkin's Georgia Regiment, Stonewall Jackson's Victory and Turner Ashby's Cavalry, Battle at Harrisonburg. Advertisements for cotton, food, wool, and other miscellaneous goods throughout the issue. Both pages are torn. Text is fading in sections where archival tape was used.
