Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This document is a map that shows the Colonies of New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, and the Ohio Valley Territory to the west of them. The map contains corrections and improvements from the Evans Map made by Guy Johnson, who was a British deputy agent to the Indians. It was engraved and printer by Gavit & Duthie, who work in Albany, New York. The map is detailed only to the extent that it tracks major river sna streams, with some indication of mountainous regions. Date range is inferred from dated letter also included in the collection.
