At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports on his activities assisting in the execution of the part of the fifth article of the Treaty of Ghent pertaining to the settlement of an United States-Canada border in the east. Discusses several problems with the enterprise, being at odds with government agents, and the various suggestions he made. Submits his ideas for Holmes to make use of as he sees fit and asks they be kept confidential. Fears becoming a scapegoat. Holmes had been appointed a commissioner to divide the islands of Passamaquoddy Bay between the United States and Great Britain. Turner was a Massachusetts state politician. Possibly a copy made by Samuel C. Crafts (see GLC05634.04).
