At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Hall considers the Civil War the only justifiable war, apparently because it brought the abolition of slavery. War between England and the U.S. "would be Fratricidal & a hideous crime." He believes arbitration and a treaty can settle any conflict between the two nations, possibly referring to the Alabama Claims.
