At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written while at a stop near Devils Gate while traveling east to Bluff City, Tennessee from Utah with a wagon train. Discusses various aspects of travel, camp, and life on the trail. Describes the perils of river crossings, particularly the crossing of Hams Fork. Mentions that there are many emigrants on the trail, reading papers a few months old, and his inability to sell any tans.
