At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Requests the recipient to procure and send a tin box of crackers. Seeks to gain information on the school of "M & C," attended by the recipient's son. Writes on behalf of a lawyer, H. B. Shaw, from Vidalia, Louisiana. Notes that Shaw desires to give his son "all the opportunities of education his limited means will justify." Contains a note on verso regarding the receipt of goods from New York.
