At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"No 14." Written from camp near Franklin. Sends home another box of clothes and more money. Discusses his plan for getting out of debt and securing a good living. Lives at the Regimental hospital and describes his breakfast there. He is upset because "this army" [the Army of the Cumberland] cannot get any furloughs.
