At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Grant is seated in a chair in the doorway. His wife stands in the doorway and faces right. Jesse Grant leans on the chair his father is sitting in and has a small medal or watch on his jacket. Imprint on recto "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1865 by E. & H.T. Anthony in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the U.S. for the So. District of New York." Graphite inscription on verso "15." Photographers imprint on verso: "Published by E. & H.T. Anthony, 501 Broadway, New York. Manufacturers of the best Photographic Albums."
