At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

As lieutenant general, standing in dress uniform. Shows Grant in full dress uniform, wearing sword and sash with his right hand resting on a table. Imprint on recto "Lieut. Gen. Grant. Entered according to Act of Congress, A.D. 1865, by Nichols & Howard, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri." Graphite inscription on verso "**Book."
