At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Image shows twelve adults and children near a riverbank or canal. A large building in the rear of the image stands testament to the destructive power of the war, as all that remains is the brick shell of the once large structure. Inscription on veros: "Group of Negros." Numeric notation on verso: "85."
