Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph from the ruins of Fort Fisher, North Carolina. Discarded clothing lies in the immediate foreground. A ladder and slight slope lead to a platform where a Union soldier stands next to a destroyed artillery piece. The carriage is on his left and the gun itself lies on the ground on his right.
