Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photography taken by Fredrick William (F. W.) Ingmire of the Congressional funeral delegation outside the house of Abraham Lincoln. Taken on May 3rd, 1865, the day before Lincoln's funeral. The Lincoln house is draped in banners and curtains in mourning. It is a mounted albumen print. Printed on the mounting is a list of all the members of Congress in attendence. Photograph has blind embossed stamp of H.W. Fay. Inscribed "Compliments T.E. Septon."
