At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Barton, a Confederate General, writes to an unknown recipient regarding the impressment of workers for a building project. States that Major Burnet is attentive in organizing the project, which he refers to as Green's Hill. The docket indicates that Barton is referring to "the result of impressment of negroes & reporting state of works." Date is taken from docket. Written in pencil.
