At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Shows the position of the 4th Division of the 15th Army Corps, the road to Savannah, the Confederate lines across the swamp. Also shows positions of various troops and General William T. Sherman's headquarters. Drawn in brown and pink ink a month after the fall of Atlanta, when General Sherman was pursuing Confederate General John Hood.
