Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A printed copy issued by Headquarters, New York, commending Assistant Surgeon John Moore for his immediate and kind attention to the wounded after an engagement with Indians on 14 August 1853. Includes description of the skirmish near Box Elder, which Moore also describes in a letter to his sister (GLC04194.22).

Moore was an army surgeon on duty during the Utah War, 1857-1861. Kelly was Moore's sister.
