At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Describes a naval engagement between "Rebel Fleet" and the King's Fleet on 10/13 on Lake Champlain. The American fleet tried to escape but on 10/15 was destroyed except for three ships which escaped to Ticonderoga. Crown Point now abandoned and burned. Mentions casualties. "General Carleton is now before Tyconderoga, which I conceive will soon be abandoned by the provincials." Mentions the victory of General Howe on Long Island, received via Lt. Gov. Franklin.
