At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

His regiment fought the Confederates on 25 February, driving them about two miles but then left to return to camp. He confides that "I never enjoyed anything more in my life than shooting at them on this occasion" and reports that "General Johnstons's whole army is in Dolton." He describes the casualties in his company.
