At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Pencil inscription on front reads "James F. Rusling. Nash[ville]." The photograph shows a street with wood plank sidewalk and four buildings to the left hand side of the image. The first building has a sign reading, "Office Post Quartermaster." A group of soldiers stand on the sidewalk in front of the Quartermaster's office. Four women and one small girl stand on the porch of the second building. A group of civilian men stand on the sidewalk near the third and fourth building. A label on the reverse notes that the image is from the Robert Schoelkopf Gallery.
