At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Knox writes to his wife from a camp outside Petersburg, Virginia. Expresses deep love for her and gratitude for her support of the war. Predicts success for the Union is imminent. Refers to Union control of the Weldon Railroad in Petersburg, Virginia and the capture of Mobile, Alabama. Mentions a grand salute with large mortars in honor of these victories.
