At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Knox writes to his wife from the trenches at Yorktown. Reports he has been sick for three days due to the constant rain. Expresses appreciation for her constant love in his absence. Mentions the enemy's fort at Gloucester point and constant shelling. Encloses a "specimen" of Southern money. Asks if she received the forty dollars he sent by express.
