At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his wife that he has not heard from her in over four weeks. Tells her that her brother Clement has returned to the company and is well. Asks that she write to him and inquires about the money he sent. Reports in great detail about the harvest, describing apples, cherries, and other fruits and vegetables. Notes that "my health is not improving and I now weigh one hundred and forty pounds last winter I weighed one hundred and eighty nine." Also informs her that he is in command of the picket.
