At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports to his wife from Fairfax Seminary Hospital, Virginia. Tells her that there will be no more furloughs given for a while, but that he will come home when the war is over. Asks her to write "all the news and some of the olds for I have got behind one month..." Letter is addressed to Masonville in Delaware County, New York.
