At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Gives an accounting of crop prices, says they are all very low and business is not good. Reports there were 1300 hogs sold in his county in four days. Informs he is teaching a class of fifty-eight students in his home. Discusses many friends and where they are serving the Union.
