At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter addressed "Friend Maitland." States he has investigated "...to learn the feeling of the republican voters of Goshen...on the question of the Clerkship..." Reports "...I think your chances are very good here now I feel confident of your success." Says he controls a lot of votes that he can deliver to him.
