At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his brother, from "Home," possibly Kingston, Ohio, that their mother is "as well as ever." Tells him that he received Joseph's photographs. Reports that "I see in today's paper that Gen. [William Starke] Rosecrans is removed and Gen. [Ulysses S.] Grant takes Command." The last page of the letter is written the following day.
