At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Provides his brother-in-law with details about the war, reporting that "our forces met with a terrible defeat at the Battle of [Port] Republic..." Mentions General George McClellan's move to make the James River the base of his operations. Discusses the draft, writing "the recent call was made for troops when the Rebel General Jackson chased Banks, the Gov of Ohio determined to raise reserve Regiments in the State for three years, and it is one of them that Ben is appointed." Letter incomplete and unsigned. Possibly by James M. Maitland.
