Maitland (1839-1918) was a pro-Union Democrat. His correspondence discusses the war and politics. Maitland's collection includes commentary on the 1863 political campaign for Governor of Ohio, Morgan's Raid, religious matters (Baptists in Ohio), the Peninsula Campaign, Vicksburg, Gettysburg, Vallandigham, Nathan B. Forrest, black soldiers, assassination of Lincoln, and mustering out.
