Hayes writes as Lieutenant Colonel of the 23rd Regiment of Ohio Volunteers to Scammon, his superior, as commander of the 1st Brigade. Discusses preparations for the inspection of the 23rd Ohio. States that they cannot always have there train ready to move on short notice and explains. "We are Compelled to haul our own forage, rations, ammunition, Clothing, and Supplies of all sorts...We must therefore know before-hand or we cant be ready." Does not anticipate an attack from the Confederates. Mentions the threat of guerrillas. "If we are to stay here long I wish to make a thorough hunt for the Guerrillas in the Pipe Stem Country. If let alone they will I fear Murder our pickets." Docketed and initialed by Scammon. One month after writing this note, Hayes was severely wounded in the left arm in battle. Though faint from the loss of blood, he continued to direct his troops and scattered the Rebels. He was promoted to Colonel and Commander of the 23rd Regt. in OCtober for his command under fire. Written at Camp Green Meadows- located between New River and Bluestone.
