At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The Court of Mayor and Aldermen declares that it has come to their attention that a great many people have violated orders prohibiting trade with Indians at Albany. The new order states that such practices have led to disturbances in the area, and states that a fine will be imposed upon anyone caught trading fur with Indians in Albany.
