At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Boudinot states that he would like to purchase flour and wheat from Robert, Jr., but can not pay more than the regulated prices without permission from Congress. "The Sufferings of the Prisoners would make me do almost any Thing in my Power to relieve them, but here my Hands are tyed." Boudinot signed as the Commander General of Prisoners.
