At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Robert, Jr. expresses his annoyance with "his Lordship," who ordered a large quantity of cattle and then decided not to complete the transaction. Robert, Jr. consents to follow "his Lordship's" desire, but "wished my Lord had been pleased to have suffer'd me at Least to Compleat that Engagement." He also expresses concern for his country's security, and "fear[s] we shall never live in peace till Canada be in our possession."
