At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Douglas writes that he sold some shroud to Philip's father and sister, and he suggests that Philip sell their blankets and duffel to the Commissioners in charge of the upcoming expedition to Canada. He also notifies Philip of his decision to accompany Samuel Vetch on the expedition, and orders all of his goods and property to be remitted to his brother James Douglas if he dies.
