At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This document commutes the sentence of Frank Hardy, who was convicted of first degree murder. Frank Hardy was to be hanged on 6 May 1870, and on 27 April 1870 Rutherford B. Hayes altered his sentence to life imprisonment. Hayes signed as governor of Ohio. Sealed in mylar, dimensions of the document and the mylar are 45.5 x 37.1 cm.
