At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Thanks for Lear's condolence letter concerning a death in Knox's family. "We both felt it perhaps too Sensibly, but more particularly the tender Mother whose former wounds are opened afresh on this unexpected event . . . grief almost too much for human nature." Knox lost an infant son and a 9-year-old son in 1790. Attached to GLC 2794.016. Docketed on address leaf.
